Crop Report from the Iowa field office of the National Agricultural Statistical Service in Des Moines. For the week ending Nov. 10.

Wet weather slows harvest

Harvest was progressing well the first part of the week until wet weather brought field work to a halt. Producers noted that corn moisture is a concern especially with wet ground conditions. Reporters estimated 17 percent of the fall fertilizer has been applied.

There were 3.9 days suitable for fieldwork, compared with 6.9 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture is rated 1 percent very short, 4 percent short, 76 percent adequate, and 19 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture is rated 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 15 percent surplus.

Grain movement from farm to elevator was largely unchanged from last week with 14 percent rated heavy, 30 percent rated moderate, 29 percent rated light, and 27 percent no movement. Off-farm grain storage availability rated 10 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. On-farm storage availability rated 20 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.

The corn harvest advanced to 62 percent complete, 12 days behind last year’s pace and two weeks behind the five-year average. Moisture content of corn in the field is estimated at 21 percent, compared to 22 percent last week. Harvested corn is averaging 18 percent moisture, compared with 19 percent one week ago. Corn lodging is rated at 45 percent none, 29 percent light, 20 percent moderate, and 6 percent heavy. Ear droppage is rated 64 percent none, 25 percent light, 10 percent moderate, and 1 percent heavy.
